How To: Convert Virtual Disks (VHD & VMDK)
Zoals eerder aangegeven in deze post is het nu mogelijk om met WinImage een virtuele disk te openen. Wat nieuw is in de laatste versie van Winimage, is dat je nu ook virtuele disks kunt converteren dus van VHD naar VMDK of andersom.
In deze post lees je hoe dit in zijn werk gaat.

In dit voorbeeld ga ik de Longhorn Beta 3 virtual machine converteren van VHD naar VMDK.
Start WinImage. Klik in de menubalk op Disk
Zoals je zier zijn er nu een aantal opties voor Virtual Machines.
Klik op Convert Virtual Hard Disk image…. En open daarna het bestand (VHD of VMDK).
Kies uit een van de opties. Optie één geeft meer performance.
Geef aan hoe het nieuwe bestand moet gaan heten.
En het process gaat van start.
Daarna maak je een nieuwe VM aan in bijvoorbeeld VMware Workstation en kies je bij de Hard disk optie voor een bestaande VMDK.
Daarna start Longhon keurig op en rest alleen nog de installatie van de VMware-Tools.

I tried to confert a VMDK to VHD and it seems to work but when i try to start the VHD inside VS2005R2SP1 the image will start but freeze when the grey loading indicator is full.
Any sugestions?

I’m trying to convert a VHD file (about 600mb) to a VMDK file, but the resulting file is many GBs big! What’s wrong here?

Wen you use a VMDK the default behaivior si the following.
Lets suppuse that you create a VM with a virtual disk of 15GB, in ESX the vmdk is diferent to vmware workstation, the vmdk must have the 15GB space alocated for better performance; when you use workstation you can shrink the disk to the minimum capacity.
what im saying is… if the 15GB Vdisk have only ocuped 5GB after you shrink it that its going to be the size and the vmdk will grow based on the use of it.
