Disable Multipathing on a VCB Proxy

In my journey of tuning my VCB Proxy for the best performance. I came across this post on the Veeam forums by drbarker: http://forum.veeam.com/. In this post, he describes the steps to be taken, if you want to disable multipathing on your VCB Proxy:

1. Log on to your VCB proxy as a user with administrative privileges.

2. Click Start. Right-click My Computer in the Start menu and select  Manage. The Computer Management window opens.

3. In the Computer Management window, select Storage > Disk Management.

If the Initialize and Convert Disk Wizard opens, close it.
The lower-right portion of the Computer Management window displays a list of all disks visible to the system.

Inactive paths to disks are indicated by a No Entry icon placed over the disk.

4. To disable an inactive path, right-click its icon and select Properties from the context menu. The Disk Drive Properties dialog box opens.

5. On the General tab, change the value for Device usage to "Do not use this device (disable)." This removes the disk from the list of devices presented by Disk Management.

6. Repeat Step 4 and Step 5 for all inactive paths.

How To: Disable Automatic Drive Letter Assignment


Voordat je de VCB proxy aan het SAN gaat koppelen moet je eerst de volgende stappen uitvoeren om de automatic drive letter assignment uit te zetten. Doe je dit niet dan kun je hier tegen aanlopen:

Open een commandprompt:

Start nu DISKPART.exe en voer de volgende twee commando’s uit:

automount disbable

automount scrub

Daarna doe je nog twee keer EXIT om Diskpart en het command prompt af te sluiten.

Na deze actie kun je met een gerust hart je HBA configureren.

How to: Save Space with VCB backups


Ik heb de test gedraaid op een VM met de volgende configuratie. Deze VM was voorzien van Windows XP, VMware tools en een aantal standaard tools als Adobe Reader enz. zijn geïnstalleerd.image

Toen ik aan het internet aan het afstruinen was naar VCB informatie kwam ik de volgende post tegen op Duncan Epping van www.yellow-bricks.com zijn blog: vmware-consolidated-backup-and-deleted-files daar staat het volgende beschreven:

I re-wrote a vbs script, which was originally created by Doug Knox for defragmenting local disks to include zeroing out for every local disk in the server. The script uses the Sysinternals tool Sdelete, download it and copy it to c:\windows\system32\. It defragments the disk and than writes zero’s on all unused space.

Het gaat om het volgende script:

Zodra je het script start wordt eerst de partitie gedefragmenteerd:

Daarja gaat SDelete er nog overheen.

Hieronder zie je de resultaten van de VCB backup:

Het linkerplaatje is de backup zonder eerst het sdelfrag.vbs script te hebben uitgevoerd. Rechts zie je een VCB backup na het uitvoeren van het sdelfrag.vbs script.

Zoals je ziet scheelt het 1,8 GB aan schijfruimte en kopieer actie. Dit is nog maar een test met een kleine XP VM met een VMDK van 8GB.

VMware: VCB with a standard user


 

Op mijn testmachine ben ik bezig met het testen van VCB (VMware-vcb-102898.exe). Tijdens deze test maak ik een backup van een tweetal VM’s die op een iscsi lun staan (hier later meer over).  Deze backup wilde ik maken met een user die de VMware Consolidated Backup user rechten.

Bij een default configuratie treedt de volgende foutmelding op:

[2008-09-19 23:39:27.251 ‘vcbMounter’ 2092 error] Error: No permission to perform this action.
[2008-09-19 23:39:27.251 ‘vcbMounter’ 2092 error] An error occurred, cleaning up.

Bij de VMware Consolidated Backup User moet je de onderstaande optie (bron: vi3_35_25_u2_vm_backup.pdf)

toevoegen:

To create a VCB User role procedure should list the following additional
privilege:
Datastore > Browse Datastore

Na deze aanpassing dacht ik dat het probleem opgelost zou zijn, maar dit was helaas niet het geval. Toen ging er ineens een lampje branden. De VCB User moet ook nog rechten krijgen op de VM om deze te kunnen backuppen.

Ik wilde een backup maken van de VM’s in de folder VCBVMS . Ik heb via Add Permission de vcb user role en de ICTFREAK\vcb user toegevoegd.

Vervolgens heb ik de VCB job opnieuw gestart en werkt de job wel met de ICTFREAK\vcb user.

VMware: ESX 3.5 and VC 2.5 update 2 new features


Ik ben nu even met ESX 3.5 en VC 2.5 update 2 aan het testen in een VM en kwam als eerste de volgende nieuwe features tegen:

 Health Status

Ik denk dat de Health Status nodig is voor de volgende optie:

VirtualCenter Alarms

VirtualCenter 2.5 Update 2 extends support for alarms on the overall health of the server by considering the health of each of the individual system components such as memory and power supplies. Alarms can now be configured to trigger when host health degrades.

Hot Virtual Extend Support

Hot Virtual Extend Support – The ability to extend a virtual disk while virtual machines are running is provided. Hot extend is supported for vmfs flat virtual disks without snapshots opened in persistent mode.

De XPVM staat aan een heeft een VMDK van 8GB deze ga ik via Hot Virtual Extend vergroten naar 10GB.

Live Cloning

Voordat je deze optie kunt gebruiken moet je wel even de snapshots verwijderen.

Live Cloning of Virtual Machines – VirtualCenter 2.5 Update 2 provides the ability of creating a clone of a powered-on virtual machine without any downtime to the running virtual machine. Therefore, administrators are no longer required to power off a virtual machine in order to create a clone of it.

Windows Single Sign-on Support

You can now automatically authenticate to VirtualCenter using your current Windows domain login credentials on the local workstation, as long as the credentials are valid on the VirtualCenter server. This capability also supports logging in to Windows using Certificates and Smartcards. It can be used with the VI Client or the VI Remote CLI to ensure that scripts written using the VI Toolkits can take advantage of the Windows credentials of your current session to automatically connect to VirtualCenter.

 

VSS quiescing support

VSS quiescing support – When creating quiesced snapshot of Windows Server 2003 guests, both filesystem and application quiescing are supported. With Windows Server 2008 guests, only filesystem quiescing is supported. For more information, see the Virtual Machine Backup Guide and the VMware Consolidated Backup 1.5 Release Notes.
